Step 1: Turn the oven on to 180°C (160°F fan) or Gas 4. Grease two 20cm/8in loose-bottom sandwich pans lightly, then line the bottoms with baking paper.
Step 2: In a large mixing bowl, combine the butter, sugar, eggs, flour, baking powder, and coffee. Beat until smooth and well blended, using an electric hand whisk if you have one. Add the walnuts and fold in.
Step 3: Evenly distribute the mixture among the tins. Using a spatula or the back of a spoon, level the surface.
